Abstract

A brief description of the blye eyed cichlid.

The blue eyed cichlid (Archocentrus spilurus) is a medium sized fish found in lakes throughout Belize, Honduras, Guatemala, and Mexico.   This fish grows to an adult size of about 4.5 to 6 inches long.  Adult males are larger than females and will develop trailers on the dorsal and anal fins as well as a more rounded head.

The blue eyed cichlid should be maintained in an aquarium of 40 gallons or larger.  A dark colored soft, sandy substrate (CS6631) is a good choice.  Be sure to provide caves (UA174)and other hiding places.  Driftwood (ZM2000) and  live or artificial plants may also be incorporated.

The blue eyed cichlid prefers a temperature of 75°F to 81°F, a pH of 6.5 to 8.0, and a hardness of of up to 1 to 12°H.

The blue eyed cichlid is a mildly aggressive cichlid.  Males especially can be quite territorial with conspecifics.  Good tank mates include other Central and South American cichlids such as severums, festivums. firemouths, and geophagus.  Rainbows can make sturdy and active dither fish.  Medium sized loricariids and other catfish may also be included.

In the wild, the blue eyed cichlid is an omnivore feeding on small aquatic crustaceans, worms, insect larvae and algae.  In the aquarium it will readily accept most prepared foods.  Good choices include high quality cichlid pellets (NL1004) and frozen bloodworms (SF4792) or brine shrimp (SF6777).  For maximum color, growth, and health these fish will look their best when given probiotics (AL169) in addition to a balanced diet.
