Abstract

A brief description of the sterbai cory.

The sterbai cory (Corydoras sterbai) is a small catfish found in Bolivia and Brazil where it inhabits small tributaries, creeks, pools and areas of flooded forest.  This fish grows to an adult size of about 2.6 inches long.  Females grow larger and are more full bodied than males, this is most easily observed from above the fish.

Almost all sterbai cories currently available in the aquarium trade are commercially farmed.  It is very rare to find wild caught fish these days.  One of the main characteristics of this cory species is the bright yellow/orange first spine of the pectoral fins.  There is also an albino strain available.

Sterbai cories should be maintained in an aquarium of 20 gallons or larger.  A soft, sandy substrate (CS7538) is a good choice.  Driftwood (ZM2000) and  live or artificial plants may also be incorporated.

Sterbai cories prefer a temperature of 75°F to 82°F, a pH of 6.0 to 7.6, and a hardness of 1 to 15°H.  Be sure water is clean and well oxygenated.

The sterbai cory is a very peaceful fish well suited to a planted aquarium.  Good tank mates include many species of tetra, other cory catfish, rasboras, danios, livebearers. and many other species of peaceful fish.  Sterbai cories will do best when kept in a shoal of at least 6 to 10.

In the wild, the sterbai cory is an omnivore.  In the aquarium it will readily accept sinking pellets (AL166), algae wafers and flakes, as well as frozen foods.  For maximum color, growth, and health these fish will look their best when given probiotics (AL169) in addition to a balanced diet.
