12. Potting with Potting Containers
Mesh Baskets
Mesh basket planting is very popular in Europe. Many believe it is the best method for the fastest propagation of aquatic plants. Mesh baskets allow roots to spread outside the pot and absorb added nutrients from silt and debris that builds up on the pond bottom. In addition they allow better gas exchange within the soil. Bonded padding must be used to line baskets or potting containers to prevent soil from escaping while allowing the roots to take hold. These non-toxic synthetic materials last much longer and are more permeable.

Laguna planting bags are ideal for pond bottoms and plant shelves, making planting and maintenance easier. They are great for taller plants, and allow water in where soil cannot escape. These bags also make planting and maintenance easy as they are made of finely-woven fabric.
Note: Avoid placing plants directly in path of water flow as this may inhibit growth or allow soil to escape clouding water.
Solid Potting Containers
These black pots are great for general purpose potting of all water garden plants from marginals to lotus. Sturdy and durable, these pots support the addition of gravel and other weights and will last for years. These ‘no-holes’ containers keep soil in the pot and off the floor of the pond and are perfect for planting and confining oxygenating species.
For container gardeners, we offer two styles of whiskey barrel liners, one with straight sides and one with a spout. The handy 25 gallon Filter Container is great for submersible filers or pumps to keep large debris for clogging the intake.
